Features One of Connecticut’s Most Elaborate Federal Interiors
National Register of Historic Places, Sharon Valley Historic District

With few exceptions windows are the original 12/12 hung sash and have many of the early 19th century panes intact. All windows on the main block feature louvered wooden shutters with original iron shutter hardware intact. The 22-½ inch foundation walls are constructed of rubble stone topped by a double row of schist blocks that are visible at grade on the east, south and north elevations and a portion of the west elevation. The frame is post and beam, its structural members of hand-hewn chestnut. It is sided with vertically sawn feathered spruce or pine clapboards. In this photograph the chimneys have been restored to their former height.

The primary façade (east) with a central entrance is sheltered by a one bay broken triangular pediment tetra style arched portico. The paired wooden columns of the Roman Doric order support a full entablature. The portico’s tympan, or triangular space, is adorned by an elaborate horizontal cornice, the lower part of which has “punch and gouge” decoration. A lunette-shaped fanlight with wooden tracery muntins tops the six-paneled front door that is flanked by two thirds length sidelights and wooden simulated brick panels. Two low benches with open back railings form the sides of the porch. The floor of the entrance porch is a single slab of granite.

The window cap details of the east, north and south elevations are identical. Bracketed cornices, delicate modillion brackets and a plain frieze surmount the 12/12 double hung sash windows. The corner blocks are carved with neo-classic sunken panels of elliptical shape.

The south wall, shown above, comprises two bays, with the windows in the first and second bays placed symmetrically above and below. The side portico is a diminutive repetition of the front portico and opens into the original kitchen.
